Sculpture of the Western Front

A few more photos from my recent trip to the Western Front. After World War I, sculptors memorialized the people who had been swept up in the cataclysm.
Those who fought:
- St. Julien Canadian Memorial at Vancouver Corner, Ypres Salient, Belgium
- Highlander, Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial Site, Somme department, France
- “Iron Mike,” Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial at Belleau Wood, France
- Anglo-Belgian Memorial, Brussels
And those who grieved:
- Canadian National Vimy Memorial, France
- Vimy Memorial
- Grieving Parents, by Kathe Kollwitz, Vladslo German War Cemetery, near Diksmuide, Belgium
The “iron harvest” of shells provides materials for newer yet still anguished work.
- Sculpture from shell casings, Yser Tower Memorial and Museum, Diksmuide, Belgium
- Casings and head
- Casings, helmet, and doves
